Description

HISTORY TIME!

The meaning of “Nippon”: Based on research, this antique sugar bowl was made 100 years ago! Items marked “Nippon” were made and imported between 1891 and 1921. Nippon is a name for Japan. At the time, that name was acceptable for laws requiring imported items to be stamped with an English name for their country of origin. After 1921, the United States deemed the name Japanese in origin, and required items from Japan to be stamped as “Japan”.

The meaning of “Moriage”: Moriage – to pile up – is a technique in which the decorations of a piece are added much like frosting on a cake. Details are layed onto the surface of the piece before firing to achieve a raised look.

Small chips on the lid – see photos.
